Synchrotron radiation solutions for innovating materials and industrial application

A synchrotron is an extremely powerful source of X-rays that overcome most of the limits of conventional instrumentations in investigating the matter. Synchrotrons facilities provide flexible, powerful methods for learning about the behaviour of matter at the molecular and atomic level and the structure at the nano- and micro-scale.

Synchrotron radiation can provide morphological, chemical and structural information on material with improved spatial resolution, detection capabilities and real-time opportunities. 3D imaging (tomography) with outstanding performances can offer unrivalled information on defects, porosity and phase distribution of materials. Moreover, synchrotron-specific x-ray spectroscopy characterisations can support the understanding of physico-chemical properties and elemental analysis.

The seminar will be focused in explaining the main characteristics of such facilities, the opportunities for industrial access and the perspectives offered by framework R&D collaborations (proprietary research, EU H2020, regional, national, etc.) in particular for:

·      The EUROPEAN SYNCHROTRON RADIATION FACILITY (ESRF), located in Grenoble (France) that owes its success to the international cooperation of 21 partner nations, of which 13 are Members and 8 are Scientific Associates.

·      Elettra – Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A., a non-profit Share Company (Società Consortile per Azioni) of national interest pursuant to Law 370/99 of the Italian Republic. It is supported by state funding as agreed between the Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research.
