The\u00a0sixth edition<\/a>\u00a0of the Venice Boat Show focused widely on\u00a0sustainability<\/strong>, with an area dedicated to electric and green solutions. Among these was the\u00a0Dhamma Blue<\/a>: developed in Spain, it stood out for being the only hydrogen vessel.<\/p>\n

7.90 metres<\/strong>\u00a0long and innovative solutions in propulsion, the Dhamma Blue is a concrete step forward towards decarbonisation, and of particular interest for sea faring cities like Venice. Daily Nautica, media partners for the event, interviewed\u00a0Carlos Orive Gonz\u00e0lez<\/strong>, the naval engineer who contributed to the project.<\/p>\n

The Dhamma Blue project<\/h3>\n

Dhamma Blue is a\u00a0hydrogen electric boat<\/strong>\u00a0with a\u00a0140 kW<\/strong>\u00a0electric motor, that functions using hydrogen fuel. The battery powers the engine and expands the speed range beyond that of a standard electric vessel. Performance is excellent, similar to that of diesel: at 12 knots the vessel has an autonomy of 65 nautical miles, but it can reach a\u00a0maximum speed<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a028 knots<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Dhamma Blue project<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 shares Carlos Orive Gonz\u00e0lez with Daily Nautica \u2013\u00a0started two and a half years ago in Madrid, with the aim of designing, building, and selling more sustainable boats. For this reason, we concentrated firstly on propulsion, developing the entire hydrogen system, but the desire is to\u00a0<\/em>integrate different technologies<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0to reduce the overall impact of construction, and of the entire project.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

The objective of environmental sustainability is also worked towards through the continuous research in details, for example, in choice of\u00a0materials<\/strong>. With this in mind, sustainably sourced\u00a0cork<\/strong>\u00a0was used in construction, along with\u00a0fibre glass<\/strong>, but eventually, we want to replace this with fibres from completely natural sources.<\/p>\n

The path to sustainability<\/h3>\n

The solutions provided by Dhamma Blue could provide great opportunities, in particular for places like Venice, where navigation must become carbon free in order to protect the very delicate ecosystem.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 says Gonz\u00e0lez \u2013\u00a0that for Venice, with its sea-faring tradition, hydrogen has excellent potential, because it would reduce local pollution caused by boat engines. We believe that\u00a0<\/em>transitioning to hydrogen<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and electric would be good here: it is an excellent place to focus on, like all other cities with a close connection to the water.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n
