A GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE FOR THE RECREATIONAL BOATING INDUSTRY<\/p><\/h2><\/div>

At Boot D\u00fcsseldorf, leading associations in the marine industry announced that they have joined forces to create a global framework for the life cycle assessment of recreational boats. The International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA), the European Boating Industry (EBI) and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) are involved in this life cycle assessment of recreational boats, or LCA for short.<\/p>\n

In the context of harmonizing sustainability initiatives worldwide, a comprehensive framework will be developed in the recreational boating sector that allows for a methodology for quantifying environmental impacts. This methodology will cover the entire life cycle of a motor or sailing boat, i.e. from production and use to disposal or recycling. The raw materials used during production should also be included in this assessment.<\/p>\n

The announcement was made at the industry meeting to showcase new technologies and innovations in sustainability. The EBI and NMMA recognize “that ensuring the long-term viability of the recreational marine industry requires forward-looking sustainability strategies that balance business growth with responsible action,” the associations said in a joint statement.<\/p>\n

Developing a comprehensive approach to assessing the entire life cycle of products is a critical step in helping manufacturers make informed decisions that strengthen their operations, supply chains and product designs. And that at the same time meet market expectations.
\nThe goal is to promote a long-term commitment to the environment, to ensure that future generations can enjoy boating without worry.<\/p>\n

Decarbonizing Marine Goods Manufacturing
\n<\/strong>
\nThe sustainability efforts of the maritime industry associations are based on the “Propelling Our Future” initiative. This is a global alliance of industry associations that aims to provide companies with knowledge on various technology options for decarbonizing their manufacturing.<\/p>\n

“Since 1966, ICOMIA has been helping the recreational marine industry reduce its environmental footprint,” said Darren Vaux, President of ICOMIA. “The development of a standardized LCA, as a continuation of the Propelling Our Future initiative, is an important step in advancing this work and ensuring a coherent path for self-regulation in the marine industry.” EBI President Robert Marx noted: “EBI has developed an LCA methodology for the European market to meet the immediate needs of some of our members. Collaborating with ICOMIA and NMMA provides a long-term and globally harmonized solution. The final joint LCA methodology will enable us to improve environmental performance and transform the future of the global industry. We are excited to open the doors to our global partners to work on the next phase.\u201d He added: \u201cA harmonized LCA is critical to moving the industry forward in tandem, from green design to navigating the regulatory landscape, ensuring we continue to do our part to protect the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Implementing uniform standards worldwide
\n<\/strong>
\n\u201cAs the leading recreational marine market, we recognize the importance of working with the global market to implement a consistent LCA methodology worldwide, as our members\u2019 products are increasingly in demand around the world,\u201d said Frank Hugelmeyer, NMMA President and CEO.<\/p>\n

ICOMIA, EBI and NMMA now intend to conduct a comprehensive review of LCA methods to determine the most relevant approach for the global market. This will be based on completed or ongoing projects from EBI\u2019s \u201cBlue Boat Horizon\u201d project and ICOMIA\u2019s Marine Engines Committee (IMEC).<\/p>\n

Additionally, the global project on life cycle assessment of recreational craft will also include the development of standardized inventory databases, tools, communication materials and educational initiatives to support manufacturers and other maritime organizations.<\/p>\n<\/div>
