A FAMILY STORY: CANTIERI NAVALI CODECASA CELEBRATES 200 YEARS OF ACTIVITY

In 2025 Cantieri Navali Codecasa celebrates 200 years of activity with the management carried out solely by the Codecasa family. It is an important milestone and one that leaves us very proud.

Cantieri Navali Codecasa was founded in 1825 by the master shipwright Giovanni Battista Codecasa in Viareggio, the cradle of Italian naval construction. He was followed in 1902 by Giovanni Battista Codecasa, known as Tistino, who carried on the shipyard during the hard times of the Second World War, and showed a remarkable ability to adapt that would prove to be a winning factor for the company.

Tistino was succeeded by his sons Ugo and Sandro, enjoying the Viareggio of the 1960s. At the beginning, the business focused on the construction of sailing ships, reaching an active number of over 50 vessels as well as fishing boats, pontoons, light barges and boats of all types in 1946. Upon Ugo’s death in 1973, the baton was passed to his son Fulvio, a key figure in the life of the shipyard. Fulvio adopted a winning strategy and a desire for diversification that would bring Codecasa to the center of the international scene, combining the production of work boats with that of luxury motoryachts.

In 1985, his daughter Fulvia joined her father, who was later joined by her younger sister Elena and their respective husbands, Ennio Buonomo and Fabio Lofrese, steadily continuing the family tradition. During the 2000s, the well-trodden path was then followed by Fulvia and Ennio’s sons, Matteo and Niccolò, who were recently joined by their daughter Chiara.

From 1973 to the end of the 90s, the shipyard launched very different yachts, such as Entrepreneur and Casabella, which sailed in American waters. The yacht Fair Play followed in 1975, a 27mt that inaugurated Codecasa’s own style. Then came the 62-meter Luisella, the largest yacht ever built by Codecasa and the first yacht intended for charter. This was followed by the Blue Velvet in 1994, the CharlyCoppers in 1996, which inaugurated the new series of 48/51 meters and numerous other successes.

In parallel with the innovation in construction, the Codecasa Shipyards also followed a development in the Viareggio area: in addition to the Ugo Codecasa Shipyard, created in 1977, the Codecasa Due Shipyard was inaugurated in 1982, established on the old site of the shipyard in the Darsena Toscana, and in 1987 the Codecasa 3 Shipyard was added in the Nuova Darsena. Starting in 2011, a new structure located in the Navicelli area of Pisa will also be integrated, a large building composed of four hangars and more suitable for the construction of large units.

At the beginning of the 2000s, Codecasa reveals a new surprise with the entry into the sector of large-sized fast aluminum open boats, possessing all the credentials for guaranteed success. The first model, launched in 2004, is built for a conscious owner who is none other than Fulvio Codecasa. The yacht takes the name of his wonderful wife, Maria Carla.

The owners of the yachts built by Codecasa over the years are its best ambassadors: in Italy Giorgio Armani, who separated from his Mariù in 2003 to replace it in 2008 with the Maìn; Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce with their first Regina d’Italia from 2006 followed by the Regina d’Italia from 2019. Leonardo del Vecchio who sailed on Moneikos, his second Codecasa. by Paolo Bulgari with Magari from 2011 and by Piersilvio Berlusconi with Dragoluna from 2019. The list of clients from all over the world is long and such trust is the result of the excellence and reliability of the shipyard.

Carrying on, generation after generation, this long history in the nautical world involves the weight of many responsibilities, but it also allows you to savor the moments of the past as a result of the right and calibrated choices, a lot of courage and strong determination of the key players.
