GRIT INTER

Introduction

The subject of this official letter is a short description of a waste copper grit recycling plant which was used for sandblasting ships.

The +largest quantities of waste grit are generated during the preparation of the surfaces of the ship’s hull for painting. This preparation includes removal of fouling (biofouling, old coating, grease, corrosion products, salt, dust etc.) by sandblasting with a stream of compressed air with the addition of grit as an abrasive.

Biofouling (figure 1 and 2) is a collective term for the fouling of a ship’s hull with plant (algae and weeds) and animal organisms (polyps, barnacles, corals etc.)
